BELCHER, Margaret Elizabeth Belcher
BELCHER, Margaret Elizabeth –
December 17, 1929 – August 8, 2023
Margaret Elizabeth Belcher (née Hunt) was born in St. Arnaud, Australia, and died at home in Cambridge Manor, Calgary, Alberta.
She was the eldest daughter of Charles William Stanley Hunt and Margaret Hunt (née Grieve).
She was predeceased by her cherished husband, John Belcher; brother-in-law, Noel Belcher; and loving son-in-law, Richard Burns.
Margaret is deeply missed by her children, Susan and Tony; sister, Dorothy Mercer (Peter); granddaughters, Erin and Fiona Burns; and longtime caregiver, Mary Hasegawa.
Margaret was raised on farms in rural Victoria, Australia, before moving with her family to Melbourne as a teenager.
She and John married there in 1956 and honeymooned in Europe, before settling in Ontario for “two years of North American experience.”
Instead, they stayed in Canada for the rest of their lives, raising their family in Sarnia, Toronto, Vancouver and Mississauga, before moving to Calgary in 2000 to be nearer their grandchildren. Margaret was a fine homemaker, elegant dresser and keen bridge player.
She loved to swim, read, bake, knit and travel. She was defiant in her 50-year-long battle with MS, and was not prepared to let it affect her tremendous enjoyment of life.
The family will be grieving her death privately.
Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the MS Society of Canada.
