MARSON, Freda Georgina Mary Marson
May 22, 1938 - November 22, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts, that we gather here today. In doing so to remember and pay tribute to another one of God’s children.
To honor the memory of the woman who courageously battled a multitude of health issues, which commenced in approximately 2022 with Mixed Vascular Dementia.
Throughout her ordeal, her husband provided unwavering bi-daily hospital support, while her adult children worked vigorously and closely with medical staff and agencies. Her grandson Levi, also played a vital role in caring for his nanny during this challenging time.
We are grateful for the small blessings God has bestowed at this time, by releasing Freda from suffering to now be committed to the ground …
Reading taken from –
Ecclesiastes 12:7
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
Freda Georgina Mary was born in Belleville, Ontario, on May 22nd, 1938, to parents Fredrick Day and Sarah Audrey (née Hayes), who predeceased her. She was one of seven children, including siblings June, Eileen, Barbara, and her surviving younger siblings, Fred [Catherine], Dennis (Darlene), and Kathy (Rick).
An older Mr. Marson initiated his romantic relationship with Freda Day in the summer of 1954, which resulted in her marriage to Howell Garfield Marson.
At the tender age of 17, Freda stood with her 24-year-old love and protector, to undertake a journey of trust and acceptance to surpass the expectations of their generation and defy the norms of their time.
The love story of Freda and Howell is a compelling tribute to the unyielding nature of true devotion.
It’s heartbreaking to think about the challenges they must have overcome as an interracial couple in the 1950s, facing legal and social obstacles.
In some parts of Canada, interracial couples often faced prejudice and discrimination in housing, employment and in social circles. As well as disapproval, from strangers, friends, and family.
At times verbally abused; judged and shunned for their choice of love. It wasn’t until later in the 20th century that attitudes began to shift towards greater acceptance. It was a challenging time, and Freda and Howell showed incredible courage and resilience in the face of hardship.
Their love was a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome even the greatest obstacles. They showed us that love knows no boundaries and that true love is worth fighting for.
The couple exchanged vows on September 17th, 1955, in Toronto, Ontario, with The Reverend Canon Bill Riesberry officiating. (Subsequently commemorating their 70th “Platinum” wedding anniversary, on September 17, 2025.)
Freda and Howell promptly began their family, raising three children: Robert, Ronald, and 14 years later, Robyn.
As a grandmother, Freda had six grandchildren:
Robert’s children, Cara & Joshua;
Ronald’s children, Ronnie Jr. & Shayne; and
Robyn’s children, Levi & Audrey.
Many decades later, Freda was blessed with six great-grandchildren:
Jaedann & Ella from Robert’s children;
Joshua, Brianna, Olivia, & Madison from Ronnie’s children.
Freda found great fulfillment in teaching Sunday school at St. George the Martyr church, in Toronto. Her involvement in helping children understand scripture was a source of inspiration.
She commenced her teaching role in approximately 1975 and continued for many years.
This remarkable lady, was passionate about Judo. Training extensively and teaching classes until her early adult years, during which time she earned a brown belt. Her accounts of fearlessly subduing opponents and throwing and flipping them gave many people great laughs.
Standing up for herself and others was truly inspiring. Freda often reminisced about safeguarding her younger siblings, Fred and Denis, during their public school days.
She also encouraged her children to participate in martial arts training.
Freda’s professional career was marked by a 25-year progression at Christie’s/Nabisco Cookies 🍪, where she assumed supervisory responsibilities until her retirement in 1998.
Following her retirement, Freda devoted her time to volunteering with the Durham district school board in Oshawa, taking great pride in serving food to underprivileged children in the morning. Called the “healthy snacks program”, which continues to operate today, 25 years later.
The woman we celebrate today was a talented seamstress, enjoying making clothes from scrap material and store-bought patterns for this gave her pride.
Freda’s beauty was a multifaceted gem that went far beyond physical appearance. Her inner radiance was fueled by a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to creating positive change.
The way she spoke about issues that resonated with her was captivating, and her ability to uplift others, even in the face of adversity, was a testament to her remarkable character.
With her sharp wit and outspoken demeanor, Freda was a force to be reckoned with, even if her candor wasn’t always well-received.
Though she may have seemed unaffected by criticism, Freda often carried the weight of hurtful words alone. Nevertheless, she remained a courageous warrior, armed with a fierce determination to make a difference, by volunteering, donating, or giving her last dollar away to help another.
This incredible woman will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to her family and her pursuit of a better life for them.
As a selfless individual, Freda consistently sought to maintain peace in her world, at all times. The mediator and yes pacifier of the family.
The one who gave, while she surrendered her own comfort, always putting the needs of her family first.
She was the matriarch and the glue that grounded the Marson clan.
Demonstrating remarkable strength, which could only be given through our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. – AMEN 🙏🏼
Your presence and support mean the world to them during this difficult time.
