MCCARTHY, Thomas Joseph McCarthy
March 25, 1942 - January 28, 2026
Passed away peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on January 28, 2026 in his 84th year. Beloved Husband of 60 years to Sharon (nee Mullen). Predeceased by his Parents, Thomas James McCarthy and Mae Guerin, as well as his Sister Marie McCarthy. Loving Father to Chris, Peter (Elaine), and Nicole (Kelly). Dear Grandfather to Audrey, Carolyn, Forest, and Oliver.
Always the hard Worker, Dad worked many jobs ultimately retiring from General Motors after 22 years of service. During his retirement he went on to become a devoted Crossing Guard for 10 years. He loved hearing the children’s stories as he safely guided them across the street and was greatly appreciated by their parents who would spoil him at Christmas time with homemade sweets and Tim Horton’s Gift cards.
Dad may have been a blue collar worker, but he had the spirit of a Renaissance man who loved to collect Art, Books and Antiques. A self taught World War Two Historian, Dad enjoyed many Hobbies including painting, sketching, bird watching, pruning his prized pear tree, going for walks and meeting his friends for coffee at the mall. He loved a good laugh and upon entering his home you would usually find him relaxing in his favorite chair with a cup of tea watching reruns of Seinfeld or Frasier, his laughter echoing the house.
An honest and genuine Man, Dad was always finding people’s lost items. Whether it was keys, watches or wallets, up to the Police Station he’d go to turn them in. We used to joke God deliberately put lost things in his path because he knew if Dad found them they’d find their way back to their rightful owners.
Above all, Dad was a devoted Family Man. He may have been a Collector of many things, but his most prized possession was his family. His Wife, Children and Grandchildren always came first; whether it was offering a drive or a listening ear, Dad was always available, forever patient and always kind.
A special thank you to our Homecare Nurse Christine and the Palliative Care Nursing Staff. Your commitment to your profession provides families the opportunity to rest and just be there by their loved ones’ side in their final days. I hope you know how much that meant to us. Dr. Matheson, the time, patience and kindness you provide your patients and their families in an overburdened healthcare system is a rare gift and we will always remember the quality of care you gave our family.
Our hearts are broken at the loss of our loving Father and Husband, but we are also truly blessed and humbled by the honorable legacy he leaves behind. Till we meet again Dad, requiescat in pace, and thank you for everything.
