MCDOWELL , Ruth McDowell (née Bielby)

Predeceased by daughter Catharine, first husband Geoff McDowell, and second husband, Harry Mottershead.  Survived by sons Rod and Doug McDowell (Anne), by grandchildren Scott McDowell (Melanie), Caitlin McDowell (Julian), Fiona McDowell (Kevin) and Alex McDowell (Samantha) and six great grandchildren; Lilith, Bertrand, Chris and Victoria, Micah and Charlie.

Ruth was perpetually active and industrious. Had fond memories of her childhood. Loved going to CGIT and eventually becoming a leader there. Volunteered at Camp Springs camp.  Attended Normal School and taught school at Falls View Public School. Started a family, returned to teaching in 1962, eventually returning to Simcoe Street Elementary School, which she attended as a child.  She specialized in art.  Put herself through school, graduating from Brock University mid career. Retired in 1989 to become a world traveller, visiting more countries than anyone I know with her girlfriends and her sister, Eleanor. Pausing to become Eleanor’s caregiver when it was needed.  Ruth loved curling and lawn bowling.

Beyond the painting, needlepoint, pottery, etc., her art continued in her retirement. Woodcarving went from a totem pole with a crude chisel in her early years, to elaborate and very detailed carving of birds and other wildlife, winning countless ribbons at shows. Ruth greatly enjoyed her cottage life each summer that she was able.  Active member throughout her life at Morrison Street Church, then Stamford Lane United Church, where she is recognized for her contributions on their wall of fame.  She will be laid to rest at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery, Niagara Falls, where there will be a graveside gathering at a date yet to be determined.  Funeral Arrangements entrusted to McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St. E., Oshawa (905-433-5558).  Online condolences may be shared at makfuneralhome.com
