SHIMODA, Melvin “Mel” Susumu Shimoda

With broken hearts, we share the sudden passing of Melvin “Mel” Susumu Shimoda on February 9, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton.

Mel passed away peacefully, at 6:30 a.m., with his wife and sons by his side and his daughter on the phone.

Mel was born on May 4, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario.

He was predeceased by his father, Mitsugu; and mother, Kayoko. Mel leaves Julia, his loving wife of 44 years; his sons, Mark (Margaret) and Craig (Courtney); and his daughter, Kaylen (Francis).

He was the proud Ji-chan of three beautiful grandchildren, Ayla, Annie and William, with a fourth on his way.

He also leaves behind sisters, Shirlene Vella (Bert) and Darlene French (Carey); brothers, Bruce (Karen) and Roger (Dawn); sister-in-law, Lisa Kawaguchi (Late Daril Marinacci); brothers-in-law, Warren Kawaguchi (Patti) and Kent Kawaguchi (Beth); nieces and nephews, Ryan (Thara), Adam (Jan), Evan, Kiyomi (Ben), Kimi (Allen), Cameron, Lucas, Molly (Dave), Brennan, Ryan (Loren), Evan, Emika, Kimiko (Marissa), Melissa (Luke), Brett and Megan.

Mel loved fiercely, was loyal to no end, and was proud of the life he had built. Though we are heartbroken and in disbelief, we know he is smiling, reminding us, “There’s love all around. Be happy.”

Many thanks to the St. Joseph’s Healthcare ICU team, who kept Mel comfortable and smiling while in their care.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for fall 2024. We will share details when available.
