Died peacefully, on July 21, 2023, at 92 years of age.

 

Beloved husband of the late Wilma Kwinter.

 

Loving father and father-in-law of Richard and Marlene, Rob and Joni, Lisa and Matthew and Kathy and Hy.

 

Dear brother of the late Sam Kwinter, Jack Kwinter, David Kwinter and Frances Forman.

 

Survived by brother and sisters-in-law, Jane and Gary Griesdorf, Simmie Kwinter; and countless and cherished nieces and nephews still in contact with family today.

 

Devoted grandfather of Charlie, Russell, Kayla (Mike), Gideon, Adam, Jeff (Candice), Carrie (Max), Andrew, Rachel and Ethan.

 

Great-grandfather of Nate, Blake, Ariella and Gabrielle. The whole family wants to thank the wonderful, vital caregivers,

 

Marge Soriano and Gina Odela, and the staff at Kensington Place Retirement Home for their incredible care. Monte was educated at the Ontario College of Art, Syracuse University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and the University de Montreal.

 

He has a degree in fine arts, specializing in industrial design.

 

In the 1960s, he and his wife, Wilma, owned Camp Kawagama in Dorset, Ontario.

 

In 1971-1972, he became the Vice President of the Ontario College of Art and served as an executive member of the League for Human Rights of B’nai B’rith, Canada.

 

Leading positions included, Upper Canadian Zoological Society, Canadian National Exhibition, chair of the Toronto Harbour Commission, chair of the Toronto Humane Society, and the Liberal Party of Canada, where he was a fundraiser and organizer on John Turner’s 1984 leadership campaign.

 

Provincial Ontario posts included Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations and Minister of Financial Institutions, Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology, Ontario Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services and Solicitor General. On January 26, 2013, Monte became the oldest person to ever serve in the Ontario legislature at the age of 81 years, 310 days.
