MOONEY, Michael Joseph Mooney

Michael J. Mooney, age 71, died peacefully, after a three month difficult and courageous battle with melanoma, on May 17, 2025 at Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry. Born in Stanley, England in 1954, he emigrated to Pickering, Ontario at the age of four. It was there that his lifelong love of plants and growing things took root. As a teenager, Mike began working in the nursery business, which blossomed into a successful and fulfilling career in landscape design, his true passion. Through his companies, Salix Nurseries and L&M Contracting, he built a legacy of excellence in design-build landscaping that beautified many homes and communities. Mike was a devoted husband, father, and Grampie. He shared his love of nature with his family on cherished camping trips to Killbear Provincial Park and created countless memories hosting his beloved annual Fish Fry and Christmas parties. With his trademark “gift of gab,” Mike made friends wherever he went. He also had a deep commitment to giving back. In his community of Port Perry, Mike volunteered for years with the Knights’ of Columbus yard sale and grew pumpkins specifically to donate to local charities. His gardening talents enriched not only landscapes but also the pantries of neighbours and friends.

Mike is survived by his loving wife Loretta (nee Garason) of Port Perry; his children Joanne (Warren Keeler) and Patrick Mooney; and his adored grandsons Nolan and Grant. He is also survived by his sisters Bernadette (Marty Buldyke) and Rose Drozdibob (late husband Walter), and was predeceased by his brother Paul Mooney (Robin). He will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and business associates.
