MOSTAT, Victoria Mostat
June 14, 1920 - July 13, 2025
Viccy and Steve were married in 1940 and worked on a farm until they moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba. Steve got a job in the mine and they started a family, three boys. In 1948, encouraged by some friends, they made the scary move to buy a farm on River Road in Richmond. They didn’t have much, but knew how to grow and preserve vegetables and were happy with what they had.
“Open heart, open home” meant that there were frequent visitors in the form of relatives and friends from the Prairies and beyond, including a niece and nephew staying for a year or two to finish high school or trade training. Of course trips also went the other way as the family would pack up the car for the trip to visit Grandparents and other relations on the Prairies. As the boys grew up and became more independent, Viccy decided to take up hairdressing, and was busy at the salon as well as cutting hair for the family and neighbours.
The next move was to a house on Seabay in Richmond. The increased space meant more entertaining. Christmas dinners became a highlight of the year with turkey and dressing, and perogies and presents with the whole family and many friends. Including a visit from Santa. She found a job working at Word Records where she was the chief (and only) file clerk. She was proud that she could out-perform a machine the company was considering to replace part of her job. She made many friends at the workplace that she loved and maintained the friendships to the end.
Steve passed away in 1986, just before they were to move into a new condo on Minoru Boulevard in Richmond. She lived there on her own, cooking cleaning and making friends and entertaining. She would invite her grandchildren and their spouses for dinner once a year, and everyone would look forward to her world-class perogies. She was also careful to remember and acknowledge birthdays and special occasions.
Her fading eyesight and hearing became a challenge for her as she aged, and increasingly she expressed the desire to just wake up one morning in the arms of Jesus. We are grateful that she is now there.
She was the last of her siblings, but she is survived by her son, Bob (Elaine), Ron (Lynda) and Ray (Vonnie) and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends who hold Mom, Auntie, Baba, in their memories and hearts.
