Joseph passed away at the Sault Area Hospital on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the age of 90. He was born in Marlbank, Ontario in 1934 to Stan and Rose Mulrooney.
Joe grew up in the depression and wartime era with 12 siblings and is survived by his sister Maureen.
Joe was a sporting enthusiast showing promise in both hockey and baseball which he participated in well into his 50s. Educated at Marlbank Elementary School and
Tweed Secondary School, he later trained at Peterborough Normal School to become a teacher at 18 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Geography from Algoma University.
He taught in several communities, choosing education over a minor league baseball opportunity. He became principal and teacher in remote locations,
including Montreal River and Batchawana Bay, dedicating his life to educating children under challenging circumstances until his retirement in 1988.
Joe and his wife Yvonne, his partner for over 70 years, raised five children—Susan Preston, Barry (Nicole), Tom (Lori), Shari Sampson (Randy), and the late Sandra Laughren (late Terry).
He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather and cherished time spent with his large extended family.
Joe’s community involvement was extensive: from organizing sports leagues and preparing fields, to founding the Batchawana Fire Department and volunteering with Sault North Community Policing.
He was an avid moose hunter and country music lover, often traveling to concerts across North America with Yvonne.
Joe will be cremated as per his wishes. A celebration of life will be held at his home in Pancake Bay on Saturday, July 26, 2025. Private interment will follow in September.
Memorial donations can be made to ARCH, the Batchawana Fire Department, or the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Windsor Place staff, nurses Maria and Megan, and Drs. Landry and George, for their exceptional care and compassion.
