NIVOLIANITIS, Maria Nivolianitis

She was born in Amygdali, Agia-Larisa, to Antonios and Afendia Balantes. She was predeceased by her brothers John (Effie), George (Aggeliki) and her brother-in-law George (Evangelia).

She leaves behind:

• her husband of 62 years, Dimitrios

• her children Chris (Magaly), Antonia (George) and Theodoros (Thanh)

• her grandchildren Eleni-Maria (Panteli), Dimitrios Paul (Maria-Teona), Dimitrios Alexander and Nicolas Marcus

• Her sisters Anastassia (Achilles) and Evangelia

• Her brother-in-law Spiro (Glykeria), her sisters-in-law Kaliope (Anastasios), Irene (Kostantinos)

• Many nieces and nephews in Vancouver and Greece

In 1960, Maria and her sister Tassia left Greece to join their older brother and his wife in Vancouver. The sisters worked for 2 years and then went home to visit their parents. They soon were introduced to two best friends and a double wedding quickly occurred. The four of them returned to Vancouver together.

Family was very important to Maria. She loved to cook and entertain and was happiest when her family was gathered around the table. She faced many health problems over the years, including 3 battles with cancer and a brain tumour. She met each challenge with grace and dignity. She never complained and clung to her faith to see her through these challenges. She was a very strong woman, a good Christian and a role model to all who knew her. She believed in kindness and charity. Her home was always open to anyone whether they were family, old friends or new acquaintances.

She will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Greek Orthodox Community of East Vancouver “Feeding the Homeless” program would be appreciated.
