OWENS, Brian McCullough Owens

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Brian McCullough Owens, at the age of 73, on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025. Brian passed away doing what he loved most — traveling through Scotland in the company of dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Victor Owens and Margaret Isabelle Owens (Holland). Brian is lovingly remembered by his brother Fred (Sharon), his nephews Mitchell and Brandon, and his niece Victoria; all of Alberta. He also leaves behind many cherished friends from across the globe.

Brian lived a life full of curiosity, adventure, and deep human connection. He was born in Vegreville, Alberta, and raised in Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie in Northern Alberta. His lifelong love of travel began early, when he travelled to the International Diamond Scout Jamboree in Ireland in 1968 sparking his love for places and cultures around the world.

His academic journey reflected his passion for learning. Brian completed a BA in History at the University of Alberta, followed by a Master of Librarianship at the University of Washington (1979), and later, a PhD in Archival Studies from the University of London (1998). Brian’s professional path started at the Provincial Archives of Alberta and the McGill Archives. In 1994, he accepted a position at the University of Windsor, where he established a successful Archival Studies master’s degree program, and served as the University Archivist at the Archives, Rare Books and Special Collections until his retirement in 2015.

In retirement, Brian embraced life with vigor traveling extensively, immersing himself in local cultures, and pursuing his love of food, wine, and language. He studied Spanish in Spain and walked 120 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago, among many other grand adventures.

But above all, it was the friendships he cultivated that defined Brian. His warmth, intellect, and generous spirit left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church (Walkerville) on Saturday, November 8th, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow the service. Friends and family are invited to Cheer a Life Well Lived in the church hall immediately following the interment.
