ASHCROFT, Pamela Stagg Ashcroft
ASHCROFT, Pamela Stagg (nee TAYLOR) – Pamela was born almost 100 years ago in London, England, and passed away on June 24, 2023, after a full and happy life.
As a girl, she dreamed of being an artist, but practically, moved into cookery which led her to being a chef in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS) during WWII.
After the war, she met our father, John Ashcroft, while working as a cook in a hotel in Hindhead, Surrey.
Despite coming to Canada as a nanny for a couple of years, she returned for their wedding in 1949.
After a few years with John stationed in Germany, and the birth of Clair and Madeleine, they returned briefly to England, and then onto Montreal where Holly was born.
For almost 20 years, the West Island was their home until a brief return to England, followed by 20 years in Ottawa, and retirement in Cape Cod.
Bee-keeping and gardening by the sea were her delight. For the past decade or so, Oakville was Pamela’s home where she enjoyed family time with Madeleine and her Canadian family members, and her dear friend, Amber Foulkes.
She especially looked forward to family visits and reunions where she could spend time with all of her loved ones, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren from England, Texas, Australia, and New Zealand. “Gammy” was a force to be reckoned with – and we will all miss her fun stories, strong views, and sound guidance.
Funeral/memorial service will be held at St. Jude’s Church, Oakville, on Thursday, June 29th at 10 a.m.
Our sincere thanks to Dr. Brush and the palliative care team.
