YIP, Patrick  –

April 21, 1943 – July 25, 2023

The family of Dr. Patrick Cheung-Yum Yip is saddened to announce his passing, on July 25, 2023, in Toronto after his battle with cancer.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Jean (Soo-Yuet Tse); and sisters, Jenifer Cheung, Iris Hua, and Chin Chin Wan. He was a wonderful uncle to Grace (Murray) and Daniel (Kim), Bill (Emily), Christopher (Jennifer) and Adrian (Susan), Colleen (Alan) and Stephen (Linda), Jerome (Heidi) and Gabriel (Emily); and loving great-uncle to their children. Patrick was predeceased by his brother, Cecil Yip (Yvette).

Patrick was Professor of Mathematics and Statistics (1970 to 2005) and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science (1999 to 2005) at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON.

He published numerous scientific articles and two books in the areas of digital signal processing and the application of chaos theory to communications. He was a four-time winner of the McMaster Student Union Teaching Award.

His lifelong passions included a do-it-yourself attitude, a love for animals, and woodworking. He was loved by every person who crossed his path.

Memorial donations can be made in Patrick’s name to Canadian Cancer Society or World Wildlife Fund Canada. The family wishes to thank the kind staff at North York General Hospital for their compassionate care.  Dr. Noam Berlin and his colleagues, in particular.
