1927 – 2023 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Phyllis Marian Massey, aged 96, on October 16, 2023.

 

Dearly loved wife of the late Vincent Carman Massey.

 

Loving mother of Ann (Neil) and John (Norene). Cherished grandmother of Marie (Dan), Daniel (Lauralea), Katrina (Shelby), Megan (Bryan) and Jennifer. Great-grandmother of Anna, Isaac, Ezra, Lucy, Ruby, and Archie.

 

Predeceased by her parents, Louise and Maurice Long; and brother, Dr. John Long. Fondly remembered by nieces, Carol, Susan, Debbie, Sally, Penny, Beth, and Linda.

 

Born April 29, 1927 in Hamilton, Ontario, Phyllis attended Adelaide Hoodless Public School and Hamilton Central Collegiate.

 

After receiving her Bachelor of Household Sciences from University of Toronto in 1950, she joined the horticultural department at Ontario Agricultural College (now part of the University of Guelph) as an early researcher in the freezing of fruits and vegetables.

 

After marrying Vince in 1952, they moved to Ottawa.

 

As she was raising her family, Phyllis volunteered at Rexdale United Church, and later became associate coordinator at Care Ring for Rexdale, which evolved into Etobicoke Senior Services.

 

For 35 years, Phyllis was president/co-president of Rexdale/Martin Grove United Church Women until she retired in 2005. Mom and Dad had a large circle of friends and enjoyed many years of fun and comraderie.

 

Phyllis and Vince travelled Canada from Labrador to Vancouver Island and north to Dawson City plus several European trips including UK, Ireland, and France. In 2017, they finally sold the house and moved to Scarlett Heights retirement residence.

 

Throughout her life, her main love was her family.

 

Family and friends may be received at Martin Grove United Church, 75 Pergola Rd., Etobicoke, on Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 11 a.m. until Service Time in the church at 12 noon. Reception to follow.
