Lola (Hannelore Marliese) Plejic (nee Mentrup)

February 21,1943 to June 19, 2025

Lola said her final “Auf Wiedersehen” surrounded by love after a brief illness.

Lola lived a life with many chapters. Born in Germany during the second world war she lost her mother at a young age. When her father returned from the war he remarried and a few years later she was joined by her brother Juergen.

She was an independent spirit who loved reading and challenging her teachers. That independence led her to leave home at 21 to make her own way, first in Germany and then a few years later to Canada. It was there that she soon met and then married her husband Slavko, and together they spent the next 50 years building a life together.

Even thought she lived in Canada for most of her life she never lost her German flair for directness, a quality that her children both admired and bemoaned, and spent a lot of time laughing with her about. That directness, combined with her kindness, intelligence and generosity led her to have a devoted fanbase, people of all different ages and backgrounds. One neighbourhood chicken and a Volkswagen Bug were even named in her honour.

Throughout her career as a medical secretary, she impacted the lives of the patients that came into her orbit. It was clear how much she was valued as demonstrated by the many gifts she received over the years and the enduring friendships she made.

Her proudest achievement was her children and grandchildren. Lola’s love and devotion will continue to reverberate as the traditions she instilled will carry on.

Lola’s memory and stories will be kept alive by her husband Slavko, her daughters Natalie (Rob) and Martina (Brian) and her two precious granddaughters Julia and Anna. And by her third daughter Tanya and her family (Steve, Michaela, Melissa and Morris) who were cherished by her.

She had no idea just how much she is going to be missed.

In line with Lola’s final wishes a water cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
