PORTINCASA, Vito Portincasa
December 13, 1935 - February 25, 2026
Our beloved father Vito Portincasa passed away peacefully on February 25 at the age of 90. He is survived by his daughter Gina and son Vince (Michelle) and grandchildren Alexandra, Victoria, Jack and Nolan.
He was born in Capurso, Bari Italy on December 13, 1935, one of six siblings. In 1961 he married Olimpia Mangialardo, and emigrated to Canada as a small engines mechanic, but soon adopted a new career as an upholsterer with Sklar-Pepplar.
As his children arrived, the original plan to return to Italy was replaced with an established Canadian life. He adapted to Canada, but never to the cold! He learned English and made many friends.
He became an avid gardener, always searching for the best plants to grow here that reminded him of home. He loved to speak about it, sharing knowledge and learning from others. Organic gardening wasn’t just a hobby for him; it was a passion and a lifestyle. His garden was his happiest place. He taught his grandchildren and their friends, hoping to inspire future generations to grow healthy food. He also loved music of all kinds. If there was a radio in the room, it was on. But most of all he loved his grandchildren. From soccer games to baseball, even braving the chill in hockey arenas, he was always there to support them and enjoyed being an active part of their lives.
In 2017, his life changed as he lost his Olimpia and he adjusted to life without her. Fiercely independent, he started to cook more and even experimented with some new things, always open to learning.
He leaves behind his children and grandchildren and many wonderful friends and family. In death, he joins his parents and siblings, and his beloved wife on the date of their wedding anniversary.
The visitation will be held at De Stefano Funeral Home, 1289 Keith Ross Drive, Oshawa on Friday, March 13 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
A funeral mass will take place at Holy Family Parish, 91 Ribblesdale Drive, Whitby on Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 am, followed by entombment at Resurrection Cemetery, 355 Taunton Road E in Whitby. All friends and family are welcome.
The family asks that donations to Hospice Whitby be made instead of flowers or other gifts.
