ROBERTS, Patricia Anne Joy ‘Pattie’ (King) Roberts Obituary
ROBERTS, Patricia Anne Joy ‘Pattie’ (née King) – Lost her battle with cancer at St Joseph’s Hospice, Sarnia, Ontario, on October 5, 2015 at the age of 70.
Pattie is survived by husband Maurice Roberts, Sarnia, Ontario, step children Paula King, Johannesburg, South Africa and Timothy MacDonald, Toronto, Ontario, grandchildren Melanie Bee (husband Christopher) and Francesca Huard Johannesburg, South Africa, great grandchildren Matthew Bee and Logan Van der Schyff (Francesca and Renier’s son). Pattie is preceded in death by her first husband John Frank MacDonald, mother Rose Elizabeth King and father Kenneth George King, brother Kenneth Douglas George King (Buster).
Pattie was born on 18 May, 1945, in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Her parents moved to Nairobi, Kenya in 1948, relocating to Dar es Salaam a few years later, where Pattie attended St Joseph’s Convent School, when, upon leaving, started a career in Hairdressing under the tutelage of Mrs. Pina Maroni who became a dear lifelong friend; then attended the L’oreal Academy in Europe to enhance her expertise in her chosen career.
She immigrated to Canada in 1970 where she married her first husband, Frank MacDonald, in Ottawa, Ontario, embracing Frank’s two children Paula and Timothy, to become more than a step-mom to them; after living in Kingston, Ontario for a few years they moved to Nova Scotia; opening her salon, in Moosehead, Halifax County where she continued hairdressing until her first husband passed away, February 2001.
Having had a brush with death in 1999 due to a brain aneurysm, Pattie’s positive view on life only became amplified. Pattie was a devoted and active member of Order of the Eastern Star, in Nova Scotia, taking the Worthy Matron’s chair. After moving to Sarnia she took an office in their chapter. She was also involved with the Daughters of the Nile. Being idle was not an option for Pattie; along with her charity work she always had a craft of some kind on the go.
Pattie and Maurice met in Florida, where they both had holiday homes, enabling them to escape the harsh Canadian winters. Their similar interests and backgrounds brought them closer together and were married on the 22 May 2005, and continued to be loving and caring partners until Pattie’s passing. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at the St Joseph’s Hospice for their dedication and thoughtfulness.
There will be a celebration of Patricia’s life on Friday, October 9 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line in Sarnia, Ontario. At the request of the family, if you could please refrain from sending floral arrangements, and if you wish, donations in Patricia’s memory can be made to St. Joseph’s Hospice.
