Born in Germany July 26th 1944, in Neuenburg/WURTT., to Ottilie Roth (nee Seufer) and Wilhem (Willy) Roth; Tool & Die Maker, both were Evangelisch and lived in Weiler and Ellmendigen in the Region of Pfortzhein (Black Forest).
Ottilie, Fred, and his younger brother, Bernie, came to Canada in early 1954, coming across the cold and rough North Atlantic by ship, taking over two and a half weeks for the trip to Montreal. They then travelled by train to Toronto, where Willy met them and moved to Uxbridge to live on the second floor of a farmhouse. Fred and his brother attended various schools in Oshawa until the family rented a 17-acre farm at the corner of Taunton & Thornton Rd., and attended Queen Elizabeth P.S. Then, in early 1955-1956, they built a new house on Fices Rd. (Darlington/Clarington, now Courtice, Ontario). Fred attended O’Neill C.V.I. until grade 13. Mr. Winter, his English teacher, had a lasting impact on him, and after graduation, Fred attended the University of Toronto, where he completed an Honours Degree in English Language & Literature (BA). Fred thoroughly enjoyed and excelled in this program, resulting in his first employment as an English teacher at Eastdale C.V.I., with Mr. R.V. Sheffield as his principal. After 2 years, he decided to attend Dalhousie University in Halifax N.S., graduating with a law degree (LLB). After completing the Osgood Hall bar admission program and attaining his Barrister & Solicitor designation, he joined the Oshawa law firm of Greer Allore. After a short time with the firm, he moved forward again, setting up his own law practice at 115 Athol St., in Oshawa. His focus was on civil law; contracts, real estate, wills, personal injury and related legal matters. Early in 2005, the City of Oshawa approached Fred with an expropriation notice to allow them to build the GM Center (now the Tribute Center). He convinced the city to make their offer more reasonable and thereafter met his demands. With those funds, he bought a 50-acre farm east of Crooked Creek (Third Line Rd., Newtonville). Some years later, his sight became impaired, and he had to give up driving his car, which forced him to sell his beloved farm. From the years 2019 to 2025, his health declined and ultimately resulted in Fred’s admission to Ajax Hospital and then to Lakeridge Health Oshawa, where he passed away early May 16th 2025.
He is survived by his brother Bernie (Vivian), his niece Kerry Johnston, Adam and Nathan, and his nephew Thomas (Amy) Elijah and Isaac.
