SAGATA, Lawrence Naveau Sagata

April 9, 1940 - November 14, 2025
SAGATA, Lawrence Naveau Sagata

Born and raised in Mattagami First Nation after entering the eastern doorway on April 9, 1940, having chosen Wilfred Naveau of Mattagami First Nation, who had married Esther Bell of the Chapleau area as his parents, as did his siblings, Juliette, Mabel, and Orrell aka Clifford.

He ‘walked’ through the western doorway November 14, 2025 to rejoin them and his grandson Joseph Harrison and his great nephew Todd Naveau, who all went to prepare the way for him.

Lawrence was a proud father and leaves behind his teachings to his loving daughter Faye Naveau (mother Frances Mercier) and his beloved granddaughter Josée Forget (Eileen Morrell) and his greatest joy, his great-granddaughter Avery Forget whom he loved dearly!

Also remaining are his nieces and nephew, Shelly Naveau, her children Trista and Jean and Amber, Cheryl Naveau Payette, Sheila Naveau (Steph Leblanc) and Mark Naveau along with great nieces and a great nephew and many friends.

He spent most of his life on the land hunting, fishing, and trapping and then prospecting. He went on to be become a Chief serving his community with a vision and leaving a legacy behind, then went on to become a pastor but his favorite job was being dad and grandpa and it’s a job he won’t retire from easily.

Visitation will take place in Mattagami First Nation at the complex on Monday, November 17, 2025 from 2 pm to 7pm. And Tuesday, November 18, 2025 from 10 am to 11 am with service led by his beloved cousin Pastor Carol Gagnon. Interment will follow to his final resting place at the Mattagami cemetery. Lunch will be served at the hall afterwards.
