SAMWAYS, Sandy Samways
July 3, 2025
Herbert ‘Sandy’ Sylvester Samways, a resident of Chatham, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Riverview Gardens on July 3, 2025, at the age of 92. Sandy was born in Chatham, the son of the late Herbert and Margaret Samways (née Coyle).
He was the beloved husband of the late Dianne Samways (née Cook), and son-in-law of the late Raymond and Phyllis Cook. Sandy was a dear father to Dana McGrail (the late Bill) of Cookstown, Robin Samways (the late Dorinda) of Maynooth, and the late Chris Samways of Chatham. He was a caring grandfather to Klarisa McGrail (James) of Halifax and soon-to-be great-grandfather to Fintan McNeil.
Sandy will be dearly missed by his sister Sally McGregor (the late Bill), and sister-in-law Marilynn Cook, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Throughout his life, Sandy was blessed with a sharp, inquisitive mind and a musical inclination. He played harmonica in a youth band and later discovered the ukulele while studying civil engineering at the University of Toronto. It was there that Sandy and Dianne’s romance began. After graduation, Sandy worked in planning for the city of Toronto. After 10 years, they moved to Chatham to raise their family. Sandy continued his career as an engineer with Todgham and Case, expanded his work with Planning for People, and completed his career with Storey Samways.
Sandy enjoyed golfing at Maple City Golf Club, a sport that was passed down to his son Robin. He also passed on his love of music to his children. Sandy was very proud of his granddaughter, Klarisa, and along the way, his musical repertoire expanded to include the guitar, piano, and banjo. He also enjoyed other activities like coin collecting, photography, and trips to Honey Harbour.
We are forever grateful for his humility and hard work, values that he imparted to us. Sandy was a rock for us during life’s ups and downs, and we take comfort knowing that he is now at rest.
Many thanks to Riverview Gardens for the care they provided to Sandy during his final days.
Cremation has taken place, and a gathering in memory of Sandy will be held at a future date.
Donations made in memory of Sandy to the Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetes Canada, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be left at www.mckinlayfuneralhome.com.
