SHADDOCK, Mark Robert George Shaddock

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Mark Robert George Shaddock on Friday September 12, 2025, in Marathon, Ontario.

Born on January 2, 1952, in Welland, Ontario, Mark grew up in Fort Erie, where he spent his youth swimming, fishing, and playing a variety of sports. What began as a youthful job working with gold in Fort Erie blossomed into a lifelong career. Mark eventually settled in Marathon, where he worked as a gold refiner and ventilation technician. He was featured on the cover of the Canadian Mining Journal, pouring the first bar of gold at the David Bell Mine—a proud moment that reflected his dedication and skill. His expertise in underground mine ventilation became widely respected, and he was invited to lecture at Canadian universities. Mark often emphasized the gritty realities of mining, where theory met the unpredictable—trucks blocking pathways, last-minute adjustments, and the need for quick thinking in tight spaces.

Mark was the life of every gathering—his stories, jokes, and infectious laughter lit up the room. Whether recounting a moose chase, getting drenched by a water-bomber, or spinning tales of the elusive big fish, he captivated listeners with animated expressions and vivid detail. His easy-going nature, boundless forgiveness, and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Mark was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Donald. He is survived by his daughter Nicole, son Michael, and daughter-in-law Alexis. A proud resident of Northern Ontario, Mark delighted his granddaughters Lauren and Audrey with imaginative stories—feeding Santa’s reindeer at the North Pole and putting in a good word with Santa himself. He will be lovingly remembered by his brothers Conrad (Barb) and Lorne (Joyce), sister Donna, and brother-in-law Bill. Mark also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews. Mark also leaves behind Anne—along with her children and grandchildren—whom he cared for deeply.

A private celebration of life will be held with family. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Kerry Funeral Home in Wawa (705-856-7340) for their compassionate care and professional service in handling the cremation arrangements. Cremation was held at River’s Edge Cremation Centre, Sault Ste. Marie. In Mark’s memory, donations to a charity of your choice are appreciated. www.kerryfuneralhome.ca
