SHANKS, Virginia Paxton Shanks

Passed away suddenly at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital on February 20, 2026, at the age of 96.

Predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Robert Shanks (2016), and her sister Betty Douglas (2019).

Born in Chatham on October 6, 1929, Virginia enjoyed a 27‑year teaching career. Starting in a one‑room schoolhouse, she completed her career with 18 years of teaching at Southdale Public School in Strathroy. She and Bob retired to their family farm outside of Blenheim, Ontario, where they remained until 2015 before moving back to Strathroy.

Virginia was a lifetime member of the IODE (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire), a charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals through educational support and community service. She joined in 1944 at the age of 15, sending parcels to troops during WWII. Over the years, she held several positions within the IODE, including Education Officer and Adopted School Convener—a role she especially enjoyed, purchasing and shipping educational supplies to a remote school in Labrador.

Virginia leaves behind her son Paul (Ellen) and daughters Becky (Dave) and Debbie (Roger). Beloved Grandma of Becky, Kate, Stephanie, Kyle, and Keely. Great‑Grandma of Hartley, Annabel, Hunter, Henry, Marshall, Alyssa, Stella, Hudson, Mason, and Griffin.

Cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
