OBLIN, Shirley Joan (Hart) Oblin, Obituary
OBLIN, Shirley Joan (Hart) – It is with great sadness that her family announces the passing of Shirley Joan Oblin (nee Hart) of Cobalt at the Temiskaming Hospital on Tuesday, December 22, 2015.
She had a long and often difficult struggle with her illness but is finally at peace.
Shirley was born in Rouyn, Quebec on October 18, 1936 and grew up in Larder Lake.
She attended high school in Kirkland Lake where she was actively involved in school council and sports. Shortly after graduation she moved with her parents to Cobalt where her father worked in the mines.
She married Paul Oblin on December 3, 1955 and together they had five children. While raising her children she also worked as a telephone operator and a bank teller in Cobalt and Haileybury before she began a 23 year career that she loved, as a radio dispatcher for the Ontario Provincial Police. She was stationed for many years at the Haileybury detachment and later at the regional communications centre in North Bay. She was actively involved in the Cobalt and Haileybury figure skating clubs and spent countless hours at the rink or crafting costumes for her daughters’ skating carnivals. She was generous and giving and always ready to help her friends, her children or her grandchildren. She had a huge sweet tooth (pie for breakfast sounds good), was an avid fan of daytime soaps, mysteries, crossword puzzles and playing the lottery and the slots. Her family affectionately dubbed her Gramma Rama.
She was predeceased by her parents Edmund and Hilda (Todd) Hart and her infant sister Helen. She is survived by her husband, Paul of Firstbrook Township, her children Sandra (Ken Koski) of Haileybury, Dean of Coleman Township, Robert (Shannon) of Cobalt, Tracey (Charlie) Vos of South Porcupine and Paula (Ron) Benoit of North Bay; her grandchildren, Todd Dufresne of North Bay, Jordan and Emma Oblin of Cobalt and Brenden and Brianna Benoit of North Bay. She is also survived by her sister Jean (Frank) Urekar of Osoyoos, B.C., her brother Jack (Janet) Hart of Sault Ste Marie, her in-laws Maurice (Patsy) Oblin of North Cobalt, Rita (Jerry) McAndrew of Haileybury, Jeannette (Ray) Audette of Cornwall, Roger (Rejeanne) Oblin of Haileybury, George (Caroline) Oblin of Riviere Heva, Q.C. and many nieces and nephews and their children.
According to her wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has taken place. Her family will hold a private graveside memorial at a later date when her ashes are interred.
Throughout her long illness, she was very grateful to many wonderful health care providers who offered her support and concern.
Thanks to Dr. Hutten-Czapski, Lynn Baldovin from Day Medecine, Colette Belanger from CCAC, Megan Sauve from Red Cross Partners and Closing the Gap PSW’s. Special thanks are extended to all the nursing staff at Temiskaming Hospital who took such care to make her final weeks as comfortable as possible.
Messages of condolence can be forwarded through the Buffam-Leveille Funeral Home in Haileybury.
The family would be grateful for any donations made on her behalf to one of the following charities: Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, Timiskaming Hospice Palliative Care.
