SHOREY, Joan Sara McKenzie Shorey

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Sara McKenzie (née Shorey) on October 12, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 92.

Born on July 23, 1933, to Joseph Daniel Richard Shorey and Jane Agnes Barrie, Joan was the youngest of four children and is now reunited with her beloved husband Grant Harvey McKenzie, as well as her siblings Elizabeth (Beth) Nesdoly, Joseph (Joe), and Richard (Dick) Shorey.

Joan devoted her life to caring for others. A proud graduate of the Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing, she dedicated many years to her profession with compassion, skill, and grace. Her gentle spirit, steady presence, and kind heart touched the lives of countless patients, colleagues, and friends. Joan cherished the friendships she formed during her training and remained closely connected with her nursing classmates throughout her life—sharing stories, laughter, and enduring bonds that reflected her deep loyalty and warmth.

Beyond her career, Joan was deeply devoted to her family. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Pamela and son-in-law Brian Snyder, and by her cherished grandchildren Zakary and McKenzie (Brittany), who brought her endless pride and joy. Joan loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor—always ready with a witty comment or a playful tease. Her laughter filled every room she entered, and her warmth and light made every gathering feel special. To her family, she was not only a mother and grandmother, but also a source of strength, laughter, and unconditional love.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate Joan’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) or the Canadian Spondylitis Association (CSA), causes close to her heart.

May she rest peacefully, reunited with her loved ones. We love you, and hope you’re having a Crown Royal and Coke with Grant up there.
