SKRTICH, Gary Joseph Skrtich
December 2, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Skrtich on December 2, 2025 at the age of 70, surrounded by his family.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Gary was well known for his passion for sports, the great outdoors, and his quick wit.
Gary was the beloved son of Joseph (deceased) and Mary.
He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl (nee Powell), his children Steven, Sarah and Kristen, grandchildren Harlee and Cruz, brothers Mark (Maureen) and Joe (Penny), brother-in-law Jeff (Charlene), sisters-in-law Sandy (Gary), Wendy and Lori (Paul), cousins Rick (Candice) and Susan, and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He is predeceased by his dear mother and father-in-law, Doreen and Willis Powell, and sister-in-law Kathy.
From a young age, Gary’s love for hockey and baseball in Stoney Creek shone brightly, shaping his character and connecting him with his community. He was an exceptional athlete at all levels. He was a standout hockey player from a young age and went on to Captain the Grimsby Peach Kings hockey club, a gifted baseball player, and an excellent golfer. Gary was best known for his goal scoring, home run hitting, and long drives. He transitioned his love for playing sports into a long coaching career, generously donating his time to the community, and became a respected mentor to many young men in the Optimist Club and Stoney Creek Minor Hockey Association. For many years Gary found solace and joy in fishing with friends at Camp Coucoushee on Lac Kikwissi in Quebec, where he would spend days immersed in the outdoors. The peaceful retreat of his cottage on Otter Lake provided him with tranquility and a sense of serenity he treasured immensely. Above all else, Gary’s greatest happiness stemmed from the love of his grandchildren, Harlee and Cruz, who brought endless smiles to his face and filled his heart with immeasurable joy.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the General Hospital in Hamilton for their compassionate care and support.
In his passing, Gary leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and love that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
At his request, Gary will be cremated and his ashes scattered at the locations he found most dear to him. Further details regarding a Celebration of Life will be provided by the family at a later date. Notes of sympathy and condolence may be left at www.donaldvbrown.ca
May he rest in eternal peace.
