SLOMIANY, Aldona Slomiany

April 10, 1933 - September 1, 2025
SLOMIANY, Aldona Slomiany

She  was born in Poland to the late Antoni and Aurela (Radomska) Fijalkowski. Wife of the late Wladyslaw (Walter) Slomiany. Aldona was a cherished twin sister of Isabel (Casimir) Krajewski and her late brother Richard Fijalkowski. She was Aunt (Ciocia) to Wesley (Ingrid), Ted (Linda), Joanne and Diane (Joe). Great Auntie to Nicholas, Samantha, Darcy, Maisy, Connor, and Haley.

Aldona grew up during WWII Poland where she was taken as a prisoner of war by the Soviet forces, along with her parents and siblings, to a Siberian work camp. Her family was eventually released to an allied camp for displaced Polish people in Uganda. She attended school there while her father served in the Polish army. At the conclusion of WWII, Aldona immigrated with her family to England. On December 18,1951 they set sail on the Canberra Ship of the Greek Line from Southampton to Halifax to start their new life in Canada. They settled in Toronto with the help of their extended Migas family members.

Aldona worked in Toronto for Copp Clark, Canada’s oldest operating book publisher. On September 25, 1971, she married the love of her life, Wladyslaw (Walter) Slomiany. Aldona moved to Oshawa where she fully embraced her new life and became involved in the Polish community. Walter worked for GM and was President of the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans’ Association. Aldona supported his many hours of volunteer work there and the Association remained important to her throughout her life. She was a devout parishioner at St. Hedwig’s Roman Catholic Church. She worked at Eaton’s department store for many years before retiring and cherished the memories she made with friends and colleagues. Upon Walter’s sudden passing on December 30, 1987, Aldona became the landlady of the five plex they owned on Ravine Road. With Walter no longer by her side, she meticulously managed the building on her own with pride and determination, retaining some tenants for 20+ years. Ravine Road was her home for 52 years.

Aldona faced many challenges in her life, including a battle with breast cancer. Regardless of what life threw her way, she was a resilient, independent woman who carried herself with grace and a flair for fashion. She was generous, kind, and hard working. Aldona loved to prepare delicious meals for family and friends and welcomed people to her home with joy and warmth. She enjoyed travel and returned to Poland several times over the years. Her relationships with family and friends throughout the world were important to her. She spent countless hours writing cards and letters, making every effort to stay connected and acknowledge special occasions or milestones in people’s lives. She enjoyed reading, gardening and hand stitching beautiful wall art. We are deeply saddened by her passing, but her spirit, smile, and kindness live on in the hearts of family and dear friends.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the compassionate staff at the Village of Tansley Woods in Burlington where Aldona lived for the last 18 months. Aldona felt cared for, safe and appreciative of the support she received.
