SMITH, Doug Smith
December 18, 2025
He passed away suddenly at his home on December 18, 2025. He was 80.
Born in England in 1945 to the late Stanley and Felicity Smith, Doug came to Canada at a very early age with his parents and sister. Doug worked at and retired from Air Canada, where he was a licensed Millwright. His attention to detail and meticulous work ethic were well-suited for his hobbies of carpentry and model railroading. Doug volunteered with many organizations over his lifetime; however, he was most proud in the early 2000s to be the Volunteer Coordinator for the Ancaster Community Policing Centre. Alongside the Ancaster Community Policing Officer, he assisted with the Hamilton Police Earn a Bike Program and the Reading Skills Program for early readers at a local school. Doug had an insatiable appetite for reading. He always said if you could read, you could travel anywhere in the world just by picking up a book. As much as Doug enjoyed all these things, his love was deepest for his family. Doug met his wife, Gwen, on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. And the rest is their history.
Survived by his loving and supportive wife, Gwen (whom he called his Rock) of Hanover. Loved father of Hillary (Andrew) Smith Wenzel of Ancaster, Jason (Xuan) Doell Ye of Toronto, and Candace (Ryan) Neeb of Dundalk. Treasured and deeply loved papa of Spencer, Peyton, Cicada, and grandpa to Felicity and Kennedy. Fondly remembered by his sister, Jan (Gord) Ruff of Wingham and family. Doug will be sadly missed by many friends. Predeceased by his parents and first wife, Linda.
As per Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no services. Memorial donations to the Mark Preece Family House in Hamilton would be greatly appreciated (https://markpreecehouse.ca/donate/).
