SMITH , William John David Smith

William « Bill » Smith, beloved partner, friend, and maple syrup artisan, passed away peacefully at the age of 67 on August 4, 2025.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, Phyllis and Murry Smith, as well as his cherished siblings, Randy, Patrick and Michael. He leaves behind his long-time partner Ann McCarthy, his brother Eric (late Maria) and sisters Judy Taylor (Dave), Kathy Amin (late Mo) and Wendy McLeod. There are many nieces and nephews saddened by his loss.

Bill was a dedicated man who lived life to the fullest, always charting his own course. At the young age of 18, he purchased land to establish his dream sugar bush operation, which he transformed over his lifetime into a true work of art through patience and craftsmanship.

Born and raised on St. Joseph’s Island, Bill later moved to Alberta, where he attended the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and earned his certification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic. He built a successful career working on oil rigs between Saskatchewan and Alberta, steadily advancing through the ranks while adapting to the demanding lifestyle of remote work camps. Despite the rigorous work schedule, Bill always made time to return home to spend precious moments with his family, particularly his beloved mother, who shared his passion for maple syrup production.

Bill had a deep appreciation for his elders and the wisdom they shared. He was especially influenced by Chess Wallace, his former grade school teacher and the renowned maple syrup expert of St. Joe. Chess became both a mentor and friend, teaching Bill not only mathematics but invaluable life lessons and fostering his profound respect for nature’s gifts.

Bill’s sugar bush operation became a gathering place for many in the community. His beautifully crafted log sugar shack, with its distinctive red roof and welcoming red door, stood as a testament to his dedication and artistry. True to his generous spirit, Bill’s gate was always open to visitors, reflecting his belief in sharing the beauty of his life’s work with others.

Bill will be remembered for his strong character, his connection to the land, and his gift for bringing people together. His legacy lives on in the sugar bush he lovingly created and in the hearts of all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
