SMYTH, Laurence Paul Smyth
December 1, 1941 - July 17, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Laurence Paul Smyth announces his peaceful passing on July 17, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, Larry immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1964 to begin a new life that would be defined by devotion to his family, his work, and his community. He was a longtime resident of Oshawa/Courtice and spent 37 years as an admired Tool and Die Maker, and Supervisor at General Motors at Oshawa’s North Plant. Known for his exceptional skill, leadership, and precision, Larry took great pride in his craft and was respected throughout the GM community.
Larry was the beloved husband of Josephine Smyth, who survives him, and the proud father of Garry, Ian, and Julie. He will be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren: Victoria, Kieran, Owen, and Carmen, as well as his devoted daughter-in-law, Pina Smyth (Valle) and son-in-law, Chuck Cassar.
A man of great intellect, Larry was known as an avid reader, history buff, a source of insight, and good conversation. He was a thoughtful neighbour, always willing to lend a hand or share a laugh, and was lovingly known as the patriarch of the family. He carried a sharp sense of humor, a deep loyalty to those he loved, and a quiet strength that defined his presence.
Larry had a deep love for his Scottish heritage, his joy while playing Santa Claus at Christmas events, enjoying bagpipe music, and quoting the poetry of Robbie Burns. He was also a talented hobby woodworker, and metalworker, and a lifelong dog lover who found joy and companionship in his pets.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care teams at Bayshore Traditions Long-Term Care, the staff at Hillsdale Estates, and the palliative care team at Lakeridge Health, whose kindness and dedication brought him great comfort.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory can be made to www.alzheimer.ca
