It is with great love and admiration that we announce the loss of Ernst Gunther “Ernie” Sohnchen, who passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, at the age of 94.
Ernie is survived by his loving family, including his children Randy (Judy) Sohnchen, Dale Sohnchen, and Will (Wendy) Sohnchen; grandchildren Becky (Ty), Rachel (Corey), David (Kelsey), Stephanie, Carling (Mark), Adam (Crystal), and Stephen (Chelsi); great-grandchildren Noah, Colten, Isaac, Isabella, Gabriella, Layla, Avery, Maya, Levi, Olivia, Chloe, Elias, and Juniper; and brother Konrad (Vicki).
He now goes to join his beloved wife of 64 years, Lydia Sohnchen; sister Hilde Morden; and great-grandson Owen Sohnchen.
Ernie Sohnchen was born on May 1, 1931, in Windsor, Ontario, to Moritz and Margaret Sohnchen. Guided by a deep and steadfast faith, Ernie lived his life with purpose and compassion. A committed Christian, he devoted much of his time to mission work around the world and was an active member of The Gideons International, sharing his faith wherever he went. For many years, he was also a proud member of Evangel Church, where his presence, service, and warmth were felt by all who knew him.
Ernie had an entrepreneurial spirit that kept him endlessly curious and creative, always finding new ventures and opportunities to build, give, and grow. His generosity extended far beyond business — he was deeply involved in charity work, particularly with the Okanagan Gleaners, where he dedicated countless hours to helping those in need.
Above all else, Ernie’s heart belonged to his family. His love for them was unwavering, and his guidance, humour, and faith left an enduring mark on their lives. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at David Lloyd Jones House for their kindness, care, and compassion during his final chapter.
