Terrence (Terry) Douglas Sole May 10, 1948 – August 16, 2025
Passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital after a year of struggle following spinal surgery.
Born in Vancouver, BC, he was adopted at birth and raised in Pointe Clair, Quebec by Doreen and George Sole. Being a genius, he went through university to the PhD level, studying parasitology. His field studies took him to Iran and other world destinations. He never received the degree, however. In his words, his thesis supervisor had the “unmitigated gall to die” on him and there were no others to take on that role.
His first degree was at McGill University, where he received a diploma in Later Childhood Education. He also received both a BSc and an MSc from Bishop’s University, studying Parasitology, Biology and Chemistry. In the early 1970s, he was a science and math teacher for Grades 3 through 11. His love of teaching science to children led him to 2 years as Nature Counsellor at Camp Ahmek in Algonquin Park. While at Ahmek, a mutual interest in photography was the spark for a lifelong friendship with Jack Murray, and an honorary “uncle” to the Murray children, Sharon, Scott & Stephen. After his move from Quebec to Ontario in 1981, he lived with the Murray family while looking for work and a place of his own. From then on, he was considered as not just a friend, but an integral member of the Murray family.
In the 1980s, Terry became a technical writer, a career that took him to various parts of the USA and eventually to Toronto, where he worked at IBM, Sperry Computers, and Wardair, among others. Later in life Terry took in his mom and cared for her for many years until her death as a centenarian in 2018.
Terry spent his retirement years frequenting his local coffee shop, where he made many friends. After a fall, and subsequent surgery in Sept. 2024, he was moved to Bridgepoint Hospital. During his stay at the hospital, he entertained friends and staff with his wry humour and gentle smile. We thank the caring staff at Bridgepoint, who were there for him until the end.
Per Terry’s request, there is to be no funeral, cremation only. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Sick Children’s Hospital would be appreciated.
