STEVENS, Terence “Terry” Edward Stevens

Passed away quietly, at his home in Oshawa, on Friday, January 16, 2026. Terry, in his 92nd year.

Terry Was born in Whitechapel and grew up in Hackney in the east end of London. Proud of his Cockney roots, as well as growing up during the depression and World War II, he was also mindful that he wanted more in life for himself and his future family. He served in the RAF from 1952 to 1955 and was stationed at NATO headquarters in Fontainebleau just outside Paris. This allowed him to pursue sport for the first time, where he excelled. He became a noted fencer and distance runner.

He emigrated to Canada in 1956 and struggled to find work, initially, until he got advice from a panhandler on which companies where hiring. He worked and established a life in Montreal where he met and married the love of his life, Aileen. Again, pursuing more opportunities for his family, he became the first member of his family to start and finish university. An opportunity opened and he took a job leading the HR department at the City of Oshawa through a difficult time. He then became the first Commissioner of Human Resources in Durham Region where he eventually retired in 1997. He was a bon vivant who enjoyed good food, good friends, travel and conversation.

His favorite place on earth was the cottage, and his favorite thing was following the exploits of his grandchildren.

Beloved husband of the late Aileen (nee Connelly). Loving father of Thomas Stevens (Tricia) and Michelle Gavin (Tim). Fondly remembered by grandchildren Ellen (Jordan), Hannah (Ben), Sean, Thomas, Caspian (Taylor) and Liam. Predeceased by his brothers and sisters Tom, Gladys, Ellen, and Frederick. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Oshawa Golf Club, 160 Alexandra Street, Oshawa, on Sunday, February 15th 2026 between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Arrangements entrusted to the McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St., E., Oshawa (905-433-5558).
