McLEAN, Stewart –

Stewart McLean died at age 91 at Sunnybrook Medical Centre after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife, Kirsteen, and their children Alistair (Maggie) and Fiona (Jeff) and grandchildren Ebban, Orryn, Nellie, Alexandra and James.
He also leaves behind his former wife, Anne, and their children, Helen (Craig), Laurie (Peter) and Catherine and granddaughter Tess, as well as niece Susan Hearn.
Stewart started life on the Moascar British military base in Egypt but a short while after his birth set sail with his mother, Elizabeth (nee Jackson) to join up with his father Arthur whose regiment was in India. Along with a younger brother and sister he spent a nomadic childhood with stays on British military bases around the United Kingdom, on the Andaman Islands and in India.
He and his siblings attended the Lawrence Royal Military School at Sanawar in the foothills of the Himalayas. In 1946 the family was repatriated to the United Kingdom and eventually settled in Glasgow. Stewart finished secondary school there and then attained a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Glasgow.
After compulsory retirement in 1997 he remained on as a Professor Emeritus. He also was affiliated for many years with the University of the West Indies. Stewart was happiest when learning the new skills required to finish building the family cottage at Kahshe Lake where he enjoyed many summers. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 11 a.m. at St. Thomas’s Anglican Church, 383 Huron Street, Toronto.
