SUTHERLAND, Mary Copps-Sutherland

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Copps-Sutherland on February 10, 2026, at age 75 in London, Ontario after a short illness. Born August 15, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, she was a loving daughter, wife and sister. She was predeceased by parents Victor (1988) and Geraldine (2016) Copps. She is survived by the love of her life, Barry Sutherland, her husband of 53 years. Also survived by sisters Sheila Copps (Austin Thorne), Brenda Copps (David Smith), brother Kevin Copps (Anne Theriault), sister-in-law Luann Gowland (Bob) along with many nieces and nephews she admired and cherished.

Mary was a graduate of Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School and McMaster University where she had the honour of being the first ever female Student Council President. Mary went on to earn her CA and CPA designations, working in corporate accounting—eventually as CFO within 3M Canada.

Mary will be remembered as a fiercely independent and highly principled person, possessing a strong moral and ethical compass. She was deeply spiritual and maintained a solid relationship with the Catholic religion throughout her life. Mary’s dedication to social causes and belief in liberal values reflected lessons learned within a family rooted in community service. A lifelong member of the Liberal Party, she ran as a Federal Candidate in London West in the 1988 federal election. In retirement she was on various boards and advocated for the rights and safety of women.

She was a curious and inveterate reader throughout her life. Mary loved a good debate, be it a lively conversation about her many sports-related interests or the politics of the day. A lifelong learner and avid library user, she balanced conviction with a willingness to explore and understand new topics and perspectives. The dinner table will not be the same without her; she will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Rest in Peace Mary
