TEGELBERG, Henning Tegelberg
May 4, 1944 - February 22, 2026
It is with deep love and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Henning
Milton Tegelberg. Henning was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He spent his early years in
Transcona before graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1965 (B.A., Political Science).
Henning loved telling stories. This passion shaped a career in journalism that spanned four
decades. Beginning as a student journalist, Henning secured his first job as a reporter for the
Winnipeg Tribune. He moved to Ontario in the late 1960s where he soon found a job with the
Kitchener-Waterloo Record. In 1987, Henning landed a position as an editor at The Toronto
Star. Amiably known there as “Teg”, he lent colleagues his keen editorial eye to shape stories
and sharpen sentences for the rest of his career. He believed in clarity, precision, and
journalistic integrity never shying away from sharing his tremendous gift for words with others.
Henning was an avid sports lover and devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan. He enjoyed golfing,
curling, and dancing. He held fond memories of travelling in Europe and North America.
Henning put his green thumb to work tending to a backyard vegetable garden and many house
plants. He curated a sizable collection of newspapers, kept the fridge stocked with quality beer,
and never ran out of chocolate chip cookies. He was a modest, ecologically conscious man who
strove to limit waste and unnecessary consumption. His sense of humour was distinct: a sly grin
would appear on his face before he slipped into a well-timed pun.
Beloved son of Milton and Laurie (Bush) Tegelberg and brother to Eric (Jeanie), Velma
(Carl) and Laurette (Dennis). Devoted husband of 53 years to Louise (Dowhaniuk). Cherished
father to Matthew (Lori) and Laura. Grandfather to Elliott, Casey, Jacqueline and Arlo. Treasured
by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Henning’s passing brings us relief after enduring a long struggle with Alzheimer’s
disease. He spent his final years at Lakeridge Gardens where he received dedicated care from
nurses and staff. He will be sincerely missed and remembered dearly by all those whose lives
he touched.
A celebration of life will take place on April 11, 2026 from 2:00 to 5:00pm at St. Francis
Centre for Community, Arts and Culture (78 Church St. S., Ajax). In the meantime, please spend
time sharing stories with family and friends just as Henning loved to do.
