ULRICH, Walter Stanley Stan Ulrich
October 7, 2025
It is with heavy and shattered hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing of Walter Stanley Ulrich, “Stan,” on October 7th, 2025, at Bluewater Health in Sarnia, at the age of 93.
Beloved husband of the late Frances (Passmore) (2011). Loving father of Darlene (Rod) Jarvis, Darryl (Sharyn) Ulrich, Dave Ulrich, Dan (Cindy) Ulrich, Doug (Dianne) Ulrich, Don (Jill) Ulrich, and Debbie (Carl) VandenBoer. He will be remembered by his sister Jewel McRae, sister-in-law Margaret Maguire, and his special friend Sue Wright.
Stan is predeceased by his brother Terrance Maguire, brother-in-law Frank McRae, and his parents Walter and Rita Ulrich.
Cherished grandfather to Jason, Joshua (Angela), Shannon (Elaine), Nicole (Michael), Laura, Cody, Blair, Rusty (Jodi), Tanner, Julie (Matt), and Shane (Kelsey).
Loving great-grandfather to Mason, Emma, Aiden, Ray, Ava, Remy, Bryce, Zakk, and Ivy.
Stan will be remembered by many extended family, nieces and nephews.
Born in Toronto as Stanley Gordon Maguire, Stan lived in Sarnia on Cromwell Street with his biological mother, Emma Maguire, and his brother, Terry Maguire, before being adopted at two years of age by Walter and Rita Ulrich of Forest. Stan was reunited with his brother Terry and sister-in-law Margaret Maguire in 2015.
Stan married Frances Passmore on August 9, 1952, and in September of that year was called by the Boston Bruins to report to their farm club in Washington, D.C. Following an injury, he decided to return to Forest.
“Rawhide” had a hockey career that included playing minor hockey in Forest, with the Sarnia Sailors Junior B team, and senior hockey in Forest. Stan played in the first hockey game at the new Forest arena in 1950 and the last game at this arena in 2007 before the new Shores Arena in Forest opened.
Stan felt very honoured to be asked by the Town Fathers to manage the entire Town of Forest hockey system. He also coached the Petrolia Jets Junior B hockey team from 1973–1977.
Stan was inducted into the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
He was known for helping anyone who needed it—from rides to the airport, to the hospital, and to medical appointments.
As one friend said, “Every town needs a Stan Ulrich.” Stan developed both Stanley Street and Frances Drive in Forest. He was a proud member of the Boilermakers Local 128 for 72 years.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
