VERNEY, Maxine Verney

VERNEY, Maxine Verney

With tears in our eyes and music in our hearts, we sadly announce the passing of Maxine Lillian Verney in her 79th year. Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother was born February 2, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, and passed away September 13, 2025 in Brampton, Ontario, having received her call to join the heavens in song.

Maxine loved without abandon, always supported our dreams and made the world a kinder place. Charming and talented, fiercely smart and funny, she taught us to be inquisitive about the larger world and to love everyone equally. Maxine never missed an opportunity to make the people around her feel seen and valued, taking great interest in the lives of others. This also translated to our friends, who were always welcomed so lovingly into our home growing up and who often thought of her as a second mother.

More than anything, music was the love of her life. She played the piano, organ, guitar and string bass. Starting in church as a young person, she carried this love through teaching others to lift their voice in song. Maxine was a proud elementary school teacher of music and French for over 40 years, teaching thousands of young people to love learning. She believed every student had great worth and ensured each one had their own special part to play in the school musicals. Many parents would be surprised that their otherwise quiet child came home to announce their role in Oliver or The Sound of Music. This passion for music lives through the lives of her loving family and generations of former students.

Maxine is survived by Bruce, her husband of 51 years; daughters Jennifer, Deborah and Jacqueline; son Bruce; son-in-law Bruno; grandson Hudson and granddaughter Navy Rose; and family friend Tabatha. She is loved by her living sisters Barbara Bradvarevic and Debra Huetl. She is predeceased by her parents Maxwell and Audrey Guthrie and her sisters Marilyn Bennesch and Sandra Basson.

Please join us in celebrating the life of Maxine Lillian Verney on Sunday, September 21 at Walton Memorial United Church in Oakville, Ontario. Service is at 2 p.m. with reception to follow.
