VICARY, Edwin Vicary
March 16, 1931 - March 2, 2026
Peacefully, surrounded by loving family on Monday, March 2, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Edwin Francis James Vicary passed away at the age of 94. Beloved husband of Molly Vicary, loving father of Julie (Tony Smolders), Wendy (Greg Baker), Rob (Michelle) Vicary. Cherished grandfather of Pluto Cotton and Joshua Smolders. Predeceased by his siblings Paddy, Jean, Hazel and David. Ed’s journey to Canada began in 1966, with his wife Molly, and daughters Julie and Wendy joining him shortly after. Their family became complete the following year with the birth of his son Rob. They settled in Sarnia, where Ed built a fulfilling life and spent 25 years working at Ethyl Corporation in Corunna. Retiring at 55, he poured his time and energy into helping others—volunteering at Bluewater Health, tutoring adults learning to read, and preparing tax returns for seniors who needed a hand. His commitment to his faith was steady and heartfelt. Ed served as a Communion Assistant at St. James Anglican Church and later as a Rector’s Warden at Canon Davis Memorial Church. Music brought him joy, and he sang in the choir faithfully until the church’s closure in 2025. Ed loved the outdoors and was happiest with a golf club in hand or dirt under his fingernails. He organized the Ethyl Retirees Golf League for many years and remained a proud member of Greenwood Golf Course. When he wasn’t golfing, he could often be found tending his garden or enjoying long, peaceful walks. Quiet by nature but rich in humour, Ed had a quick wit that delighted those who knew him. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people, striking up conversations with strangers and somehow always finding someone who knew him. Cremation has taken place. Visiting will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, Sunday, March 15, 2026 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to a charity of choice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
