WAARBROEK, Frank Waarbroek

Franciscus “Frank” Adrianus Laurens Waarbroek of Oshawa, Ontario, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, in his 91st year.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Hilda, and his children Robert (Matina) and Jennifer (Bill). Predeceased by his ten siblings—Toni, Wim, Gerda, Nel, Mies, Francien, Diny, Henk, Bea, and Anny—Frank is fondly remembered by his many dear nieces and nephews across Canada, the USA, and the Netherlands, and by his treasured friends, especially Annette and Jan.

Born in Gaanderen, the Netherlands, to Hendrikus Waarbroek and Sophia (née Goettsch), Frank embarked on his life-changing journey aboard the SS Zuiderkruis at 19, landing in Quebec City on June 4, 1954. After traveling to Toronto, he began working—delivering coal, painting homes (including the Tip Top Tailors Building), and later joining Canadian Tire, where he improved his English using an auto parts manual.

Through a serendipitous meeting, he found love with fellow Dutch immigrant Hilda, and they married in 1960 at Old Toronto City Hall. Together they raised a family and built a cottage on Sunny Lake near Gravenhurst, embracing the Canadian life they had dreamed of.

After 25 fulfilling years at Ontario Hydro, Frank retired and enjoyed a long and happy retirement. A talented draftsman, avid gardener, and gracious host, he found joy in tending to his home, visiting family and friends, and cultivating lifelong connections. He especially valued the friendship of neighbours like Reg and Fran.

Frank’s life was one of integrity, generosity, and humility. He faced the challenges of heart disease in his later years with resilience and grace. Special thanks to the staff at Lakeridge Health for their compassionate care.

As a regular blood donor for over 30 years, Frank proudly gave back to the country that liberated his homeland and welcomed him with open arms. Those wishing to honour his legacy may consider a donation to Canadian Blood Services.

In accordance with Frank’s wishes, no formal funeral will be held. A celebration of life will be arranged at a later date.
