WHITEHEAD, Ruth Whitehead
November 5, 1924 - September 5, 2025
With love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Ruth Whitehead, who passed away at the remarkable age of 100 after a century filled with family, love, and adventure.
Born in Oshawa, Ontario on November 5th, 1924, Ruth grew up on the family dairy farm on Thornton Road with her parents, her brother Lloyd, and sisters Erma, Dorothy, Helen, and Elsie. Following high school, Ruth contributed to the war effort working proudly as one of the “Bomb Girls” at Ajax munitions, later inspecting shells at Peddler’s, and wiring bomber panels at General Motors. She eventually moved to Toronto where she worked at General Electric.
In 1949, Ruth met the love of her life Ed at a local dance hall. They shared a passion for dancing, and their courtship included many evenings on the dance floor. They exchanged heartfelt letters and weekly phone calls while Ed was away at Police College Training to become a Constable with the Ontario Provincial Police. They married in July 1951 and built a life together in Toronto, Scarborough, Beaverton, Oshawa, and finally Little Britain.
Later, Ruth was so happy to leave her job to raise her two children Susan and Donald who have been such a joy in her life.
She was an avid bowler who excelled in the sport, earning many trophies over the years. She also loved to golf, played darts at the Legion, and enjoyed a good game of horseshoes. Whatever activities she tried, she did it with skill and enthusiasm, and she was known for her natural ability to succeed at anything she set her mind to. She and her husband also enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years, creating countless happy memories together and with friends and family. Ruth believed deeply in the Church, drawing strength and guidance from her faith, and she valued the friendships and fellowship it brought to her life.
She and Ed later embraced adventure by learning to fly together- Ed as a private pilot and Ruth as his co-pilot, proudly earning her own license so she could take the controls if needed. Their shared love of travel took them to Alaska, Florida, the Bahamas, and on many more trips with friends from the Oshawa Airport community.
Ruth’s 100 years were marked by resilience, devotion, and a deep love for her family and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Ed (2005) and her granddaughter Chantal (2016). She is survived by her daughter Susan (Raymond), her son Donald (Tina), her grandchildren Brandi, Keith, Javier, Steven, and Sonia, and her great-grandchildren Julian, Hunter, Dominic, Damian, and her namesake Lottie.
Ruth’s long and wonderful life was an inspiration to all her knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
