Lawrence WilliamLAWRENCE, William  –  It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Lawrence in his ninety second year on July 14, 2023.

 

For fifty years, Bill was a welcomed guest into thousands of homes through CBC TV, CHCH TV and Global Television.

 

He began his career with the golden age of television, and with energy, imagination and innovation influenced and developed dozens of programs and series.

 

Bill was a professor at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly, Ryerson University) in the Department of Media Studies Radio and Television Arts for sixteen years. He is a member of the Wall of Fame for Media Arts.

 

Bill much appreciated his students’ achievements as he watched them continue to shape and expand the new medium.

 

Bill grew up in Westdale, attending George R. Allen, Westdale Secondary, Ryerson, and McMaster universities. Bill is survived by his childhood sweetheart, his wife of almost 66 years, their daughter, Dr. Tracy Lawrence-Black (Dr. Richard), their son, Steven Lawrence (Nancy); their five grandchildren, Patrick Waind (Emma), Alden Black (Marina), Michael Lawrence, Kevin Lawrence (Nicole), and Dr. Celeste Dixon (Tim); their nephew, Mark Armstrong, and their nieces Karen James and Cheryl James.

 

The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Peter’s Hospital, especially Dr. Solomon, and nurses Amanda, Karen, Jennifer and Danuta for their compassionate care.

 

No formal services are planned, as per Bill’s wishes.
