WOOD , Norma “Joan” Muriel (Layman) Wood

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Joan Wood (nee Layman). Joan passed away in palliative care at Caressant Care in Cobden on Friday July 11, 2025. Beloved wife and best friend for 60 years to the late Kenneth R. Wood. Most cherished Mom to Anna Vandenbelt (Rick), Peter (deceased), Tammy Friesen (Glenn) and Matt (Chantal).

Joan was the daughter of Alex and Annie Layman (nee Wilkie). Predeceased by her sister Mildred (Gordon Wilson). Mom was cherished by Joan and Leigh McIver, Susan and Patrick Moore, David and Glenda Smith, and Jim Allingham.

Loving Moppy/Munko to Matthew Friesen, Sarah Vandenbelt (Kevin Bozzo), Colin Friesen (Jenna Lebreton-Holmes), Brendan Smith, Michael Vandenbelt and Zach Cloutier. Great Moppy to Wyatt, Lydia (Friesen) Owen and Liam (Bozzo).

After a long successful career with the Federal Government, Mom and Dad moved to Golden Lake to live on the lake in retirement. She had a wonderful full life there. Volunteering at the library, a member of Cuddles and Hug’s who make and quilt quilts for patients with cancer. We were told Mom quilted more than 1000 quilts. She was, also, a member of the Golden Lake Garden Club. Mom was considered a ‘master’ gardener. She and Dad changed what was mostly a bush, when they arrived, to many gardens and a lovely pond.

The family would like to send their love and thanks to Dr. Michael Patrini, his wife Janet and all the staff at Dr. Mike’s office. Your care over the last many decades was unbelievable. You clearly cared for Mom and she knew it.

Thanks, also, to the entire staff at Champlain Gardens in Barry’s Bay, the nursing and medical support teams, second floor St. Francis Memorial Hospital and finally all staff at Caressant Care in Cobden. Mom was so well cared for and loved and your support to our family was unbelievable. It will never be forgotten.

Joan’s final arrangements have been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Killaloe. A private family celebration of life will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. Tributes, condolences and donations may be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com.
