Barbara was born in Beaverton, Ontario on June 18, 1933 to Donald Smith and Wanetta DeGuerre. By age 20 she had left to attend teacher’s college and then over a 35-year career taught hundreds of grade 1 children in the Toronto area to read, write and do arithmetic. She was an energetic and committed teacher, often taking her classes on field trips to see cows on farms, pick wildflowers in the woods or apples in orchards, and to try skating.
With her first husband, Bruce Simpson, she travelled all over North America by car and camper. She drove standard shift her whole life, refusing to ‘learn’ automatic. With Phil and often also her sister and friends she continued to make trips, including her first by airplane.
Barbara loved her cats and her collections and was an extraordinary gardener. More than that she cherished get-togethers with family and friends, especially over a game of Scrabble.
A service to celebrate the life of Barbara will be held in Spring 2026 at the WAGG FUNERAL HOME, 216 Queen Street in Port Perry (905-985-2171). Interment to follow at Old Stone Church Cemetery in Beaverton. In lieu of flowers please consider making gifts to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation or Lakeridge Health Foundation as thanks for the extraordinary care they provided Barbara in her final weeks.
