Michael Robert Mercer

1943 – 2025

On the 9th day of April 2025, Michael "Mike" Robert Mercer passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.

Mike was a devoted husband to Barbara, loving father to Lisa and Jenna, and proud father-in-law to Craig, Mark, and Karl. He was a cherished papa to Taylor (Joey), Jamie (Cory), Jake (Jasmine), Maddie (Johnny), and Emma. He was predeceased by his parents, Valerie and Peter, and is survived by his brother Rick.

Born on April 6th, 1943, in Sherborne, England, Mike immigrated to Canada at the age of six with his grandmother. He served with honour in the Canadian Armed Forces and was always eager to share stories of his youth. Alongside his wife, he co-founded and successfully ran Mercer Broadloom for over 20 years — a business built on hard work and love.

Mike was a longtime and proud member of the Oshawa Gun Club, visiting regularly on Wednesdays, and found joy puttering in his garage between those visits. He treasured time spent at his trailer on Jack Lake, where for over 50 years he fished, boated, and relaxed on the dock with wine and good company. He loved to dance — especially to “The Gambler,” “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” and “Footloose” — never letting bad knees slow him down.

Mike loved fiercely. He laughed loudly, cried openly, listened deeply, and supported those around him with strength and sincerity. He will be sorely missed, fondly remembered, and joyfully celebrated at every future gathering.

The family will receive friends at Wagg Funeral Home, 216 Queen Street in Port Perry, on Thursday, April 17th, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A service to commemorate Mike’s life will follow in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation.

Memories, photos, and condolences may be shared at Wagg Funeral Home.

Dear brother to Marion (Robert) Hewines. Predeceased by his siblings Audrey Andrews and Wallace Wilson.

Robert will be lovingly remembered by Tanya Wilson, many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Robert (Bob) Wilson was born in Toronto, the first child of Robert and Verna Wilson. From a young age, he devoted his life to serving his Lord and Saviour. Growing up, he attended the Salvation Army, learning the trombone and playing in the band.

Bob married the love of his life, Dianne, in 1957. Early in their married life, they started attending a Baptist Church, where they raised their family. Over the years, he used his gift of music to minister in many churches.

Bob was a devoted family man who loved Dianne, his wife of 67 years, and their five children, whom he worked hard to provide for. Bob started his career as a Butcher, and then shortly after marrying Dianne, he became a Toronto Firefighter, serving the city for thirty years.

Bob loved his brass band music, baseball, and reminiscing about his firefighting career. But above all, he loved and dedicated himself to his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

We can rest assured that our Dad is now safe with God and has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at Westney Heights Baptist Church on Thursday, April 17th, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior—a luncheon reception to follow the service.

James Douglas McCartney

May 6, 1942 - April 2, 2025

In the early hours of April 2nd, 2025, James (Jim) Douglas McCartney passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him dearly. Jim is survived by his sister Donna (Andrechuk), his daughters Janine, Heather (Roy), and Karen (Derek), along with his grandsons Carlton, Wade, Jacob, Mayson, Brady and a great many nieces and nephews.

Jim was born in Wingham, Ontario in 1942. He was one of seven children. He moved to Ajax where he excelled at the sport that he loved the most: baseball. Jim was a talented pitcher, who was cited as an ace right hander in many newspaper articles. Jim helped lead his teams to multiple Championships in the 1950’s. It was also in Ajax that he met his wife, Carmel.

Jim began his career in General Motors in 1964. He began in Central Maintenance and then later spent most of his career in Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. Jim loved GM and often spoke proudly of his career that spanned 30+ years. He retired in 1997.

Jim was spirited, and opinionated. You never had to guess where you stood with him. If he told you, you were “top of the drawer,” you knew you were one of his favourite people. Beneath the Scottish bluster, he led with a generous heart. Forever in our minds will be his mantra… “Things should be done with consistency, decency and for the right reasons.” He was generous to a fault and loved to laugh more than anything else. His smile lit up every room he walked into. Jim had many faithful friends in his final years, whom he spoke so highly of.

Jim lived honestly; he loved deeply; he laughed as loud as he “sometimes” yelled. He was one in a million, and we are so very proud to say he was ours. Dad, you did great. Rest with the angels now... Your work here is done.

As requested by Jim, no formal service will be held. Donations to any charity in Jim’s name are welcome and appreciated.
