Rosalie Gwendolyn Quinton

May 20, 1922 – January 5, 2025

The family is saddened to announce the unexpected passing of our Aunt Rosalie on January 5, 2025. Rosalie, in her 103rd year, enjoyed a long and well-loved life. As an ever-present constant in our lives, we, her many nieces and nephews, naively thought we’d have more time. Our compassionate funeral director consoled us with a kind reminder, “Of course you would be shocked; she gave you no notice!”

Rosalie is predeceased by her parents, Eleazar Quinton and Florence (Simms) Quinton, as well as her eight siblings, including her sisters and brothers-in-law: Charles (Hazel), Lora (Sam), Harold (Lorraine), Martha (Reginald), Clyde (Jean), George (died as an infant), Rex (Dolly), and Don (Gussie).

Born and raised in the small village of Charleston, Newfoundland, founded by her great-grandfather Charles Quinton, Rosalie was a bright, energetic child who excelled at school and preferred staying indoors to pursue her interests. As a young woman, she remained resolute in her independence, warning that if marriage meant abandoning work, it was not for her.

After her schooling, Rosalie ventured to St. John’s, Newfoundland, and later moved to Ontario, joining her siblings. She dedicated herself to her work well into her seventies, finding purpose and joy in her career. Deeply loyal to her family and compassionate toward young children, she was a long-time donor to the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation. Her steadfast love was evident in her annual birthday cards, which always included two dollars, a gesture fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews.

Rosalie’s daily five-minute chats often ended with, “As long as you’re okay, that’s the main thing. Love you lots and we’ll talk tomorrow.” Her cross-continent weather updates were a constant source of amusement and love. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Amica in North York, including doctors, nurses, PSWs, housekeepers, custodians, and even the hairdresser and pedicurist, who brought so much joy to Rosalie’s days.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at McEachnie Funeral Home.
