SAULT, Ethel Kathleen Sault

1932 – 2024

Ethel Kathleen Sault, a woman of remarkable grace and unwavering strength, left this world on June 25, 2024, at Hogarth Riverview Manor in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She was born on December 14, 1932, to loving parents William and Marguerite Sault.

Ethel’s life was marked by deep love and profound loss. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Stanley Hunnisett, her first husband Lyle Johnston, her sister Monica (Edgar) Turner, and her brothers William (Betty) Sault, Ronald (Edna) Sault, and Harold (Chris) Sault. Despite the sorrow of these losses, Ethel’s spirit remained resilient, buoyed by the love of her surviving family.

She is survived by her devoted children: son Kevin (Sandra), daughter Susan (Steven), and son Stacey. Her legacy lives on through her cherished grandchildren: Lindsay (Chris) Difelice, Stephen (Brooke) Raymond, Jason (Chantel) Carignan, and Wyatt Johnston. Ethel’s great-grandchildren, Stevie, Madison, Avery, Victoria, and Raymond, brought immense joy to her life.

Ethel’s circle of love extended beyond her family to include many nieces, nephews, and her special friends Brenda Mason, Phil and Laura Fralick, and her sister-in-law Angela Sault. Their companionship and support enriched her life in countless ways.

Ethel shared a deep bond with her husband and found solace and joy in their love. Her marriage was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength and comfort through the passage of time.

Ethel was a woman of many talents and passions. She found joy in traveling across Canada, the U.S.A., and Europe, creating lasting memories with her loved ones. As an author, Ethel’s storytelling skills were unmatched, inspired by her grandfather’s tales of ancient legends. She shared her culture with others, teaching and translating to ensure its preservation.

Her career as a Native Language Teacher at Grand Portage School reflected her dedication to education and her Indigenous roots. Her commitment to her heritage extended beyond the classroom, as she co-founded the Ontario Native Women’s Association, served as an Ojibwa Language Interpreter, and an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor.

Ethel’s compassionate nature and contagious laughter endeared her to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She possessed a rare combination of ambition, creativity, compassion, conscientiousness, courage, honesty, humility, and integrity. Ethel’s boundless generosity and warm spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts and minds.

Funeral Services for Ethel will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, leaving the Harbourview Funeral Centre at 1:00 p.m. to Corpus Christi Church, 664 Red River Road, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Rey Ronquillo at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

For those not able to attend in person, the Funeral Mass will be streamed live at www.harbourviewfuneral.ca where condolences may be offered as well.

As we gather to honor her memory, we extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Long, PSWs, and the nurses at Hogarth Riverview Manor, Orchid Unit, for their compassionate care in her final days.

In the quiet moments of reflection, Ethel Sault’s spirit will continue to shine brightly, a beacon of love and resilience for all who were fortunate enough to know her. May her legacy of strength, kindness, and laughter live on in the hearts of those who were touched by her extraordinary life.
