MATHESON, Dugald Frank - At his home in Toronto on October 30 2018, of cancer.

Cared for by his wife, Philippa (Maggie) Wallace Matheson.

Dugald is survived also by his sons, Ian Norman Matheson and Peter Donald Matheson, and by his sisters, Rosemary Cornish (and her husband Len) and Shirley Adams (and her husband Robin), all in the UK, as well as by nieces, nephews, and great-nephews and -nieces (UK, Hong Kong, Australia).

The son of medical parents (Louise Alice Matheson and Norman Murdoch Matheson), Dugald was born and educated in the UK. He published neurological research on peripheral nerve (PhD 1968 University of London while working at the Institute of Neurology, Queen’s Square, London); myelination; GABA (at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands); brain capilliaries, and the importance of omega-3 and omega-6 for brain development (at Erindale College, University of Toronto).

He taught (with much enjoyment) at Algoma College, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (1975), and taught and did research at the University of Toronto (1976-1981).

He received a volunteer award from the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario for his work with Canadian societies for neurological diseases (Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s) and as a mentor to Toronto grade school students (Prime Mentors of Canada, the Toronto Intergenerational Project).

His interests included geology, botany, and painting, usually scenes from his travels (Scotland, Bavaria where he did national service, Greece, the Danube, east and west coasts of Canada) but above all scenes of northern Ontario where he happily spent some part of every summer for 45 years at the family cottage.

Funeral private.

Donations may be made in his name to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto.
