Martino CarmelaMARTINO, Carmela (Modugno) - On November 2, 2019 at Humber River Regional Hospital at the age of 85.

She was the beloved wife of 58 years of the late Ralph Martino.

Mom was an indomitable woman who overcame many adversaries in her life, but who demonstrated through her faith that all is possible.

She fought valiantly for what she believed in.

She was a social butterfly who loved to celebrate special occasions, religious feast days, birthdays, and life events. Mom was a woman of faith who made decisions based on the belief that whatever was determined was God’s will. Mom’s strong personality and caring nature earned her many many friends, but could also shy others away.

Mom sacrificed her life for her three children: Anna (Peter), Gino (Virlana), and Pino (Janet). She fought hard to get support and resources for our brother, Pino and later in life for our father who had sustained a workplace injury years before.

She loved to make orecchiette and other homemade pasta for her children and would make it often. It was probably her way of ensuring she could see us! Her delicious “petole” and “carte tagliate” are traditions we will carry on during Christmas.

She will be missed by her grandchildren Laura (Jordan), Carlo (Nancy), Deanna (Phil), Aleksa, Sebastian, Stefan and Skyla as well as her great-grandson, Nico and forthcoming great-grandchild.

Mom’s surviving siblings, sister Nancy (Nick), Woodbridge, Rocco (Lina) Montescaglioso, Graziella, Matera are heartbroken to lose their feisty sister as are all family and friends in Canada, Italy, and Spain. She leaves behind a great void to fill.

Special thanks go out to her true friends and neighbours, Emilia and Luigina, her PSW “Julia” and Elsa before her, as well as the nursing staff on the 7th floor of HRH and the attending doctors, in particular, Dr. Jody Turi who took exceptional care of mom in her last week of life. THANK YOU ALL!

Viewing is at Bernardo Funeral Home, Dufferin Chapel, Toronto on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 2-5 pm and 6-9 pm. Christian Mass at St. Fidelis Church, 33 Connie St., Toronto at 9:30 am,. Entombment to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canadian Hearing Society or Villa Colombo, VCLA.
