Edwards NancyEDWARDS, Nancy Christine (Whitehead) Edwards - It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Edwards announces her passing on Sunday morning, January 12, 2020, at the age of 95 in the Veteran’s Wing of Sunnybrook Hospital.

Predeceased by parents Pearl and Roy Whitehead, and by beloved husband, Donald Davidson Edwards, she is survived by loving daughters Ann and Mary Ellen Edwards, and son in law, Michael Connolly (Ann).

Many thanks to the nurses and aides at the Veteran’s Wing for the exceptional and loving care they provided to Nancy in the ten years she was a resident.

Born and raised in Toronto, Nancy attended Whitney Public School, and later St. Clements girls’ school. Nancy fondly remembered Miss Waugh, the principal of the school during her years there. Nancy loved playing on the St. Clements basketball team. With her wonderful story telling ability and great humour Nancy would describe the last game of her final year when they won the finals, beating Havergal.

After serving as a WREN in the Women’s Royal Navy in WWII, where she and the other wrens intercepted enemy communications first in Halifax and then later on Victoria island, Nancy pursued musical studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music and its Opera School, as well as the Banff School of Fine Arts. Upon graduating, Nancy pursued a performing career in Canada and later in England.

In addition to her singing talent, Nancy was an actress and comedienne. Late Canadian composer, Court Stone, wrote well reviewed shows specifically around Nancy as the lead. Nancy fondly remembered being directed by the great Canadian theatre director, Bob Gill.

Eventually Nancy left Toronto for a performing career in England.   In 1956 Nancy won the international auditions at Covent Garden Opera House in London, England for the position of Principal Mezzo Soprano. After being accepted she worked with the great Eric Mitchell at Covent Garden in preparing particularly for Wagnerian roles.

Around that time, Paramount Motion Pictures in Hollywood approached her about signing a movie contract with them. Columbia Record Artists Management also sent out an agent with a performing contract in hand for her to sign. Nancy was also asked to perform for the Queen.

Eventually, Nancy made the difficult choice between career and family, eventually returning to Toronto where she married Donald in 1958 and had her girls. Nancy was dedicated to her husband, whom she adored, and to her children, whom she adored just as much.

Nancy’s dedication to Christian Science and her faith in God were a central part of her life. She always believed that if God hadn’t lead her in a certain direction, then that direction lead nowhere.

May she continue her walk with God.
