Pong MargaretPONG, Margaret Wai Ming - (10 November, 191913 October, 2020)

Margaret Pong was born on November 10, 1919 in Hong Kong. She was the second oldest daughter of Lee Chau Nam and Hui Lin Tai in a family of 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Lee Wai Ming was a social worker in Chengdu province and married Shelton Pong in China.

When the Second World War broke out, they were forced to leave China and return to Margaret’s hometown of Hong Kong. While living in Hong Kong, they had their two children, Elaine and Edward. Shelton left Hong Kong and came to British Columbia, Canada to make a new life for his family.

He re-studied engineering at UBC and in 1956 was able to bring Margaret and the two children to Canada to join him. They lived in Vancouver, Niagara Falls and finally settled in Scarborough. Margaret worked as a social worker at Toronto General Hospital and finished her Masters of Social Work degree at the University of Toronto in 1970. She subsequently got her Diploma in Advanced Social Work from the University of Toronto in 1976 and went on to work for the Addiction Research Foundation which later became CAMH.

Life was not easy in those early years in Canada as Margaret also worked in Shelton’s takeout restaurant after finished work at TGH. She worked tirelessly to raise her family and had very little time for herself. Her interests were knitting, baking and sewing.

She loved the cottage they acquired when she was in her 60’s, where her grandchildren Jonathan and Karyn would spend most weekends with them. After retirement, she helped with her grandchildren and loved to have them stay over with her on weekends.

Margaret moved from their little house on Orton Park Road to Cedarbrook Lodge when she was 88. She moved to Mon Sheung Private care after a hip replacement surgery at age 95. At age 97 she moved to Union Villa Nursing Home where she peacefully passed away in her sleep on October 13, 2020.

She was a loving wife to husband Shelton, loving mother to her daughter Elaine and son Edward. She was a very loving and caring grandmother to her three grandchildren: Jonathan, Karyn and Jessica. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Isaac, Lucas and Abby Chan and Mikey Pong. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Arrangements with Giffen-Mack funeral home, Scarborough chapel (WEST HILL).

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honour can be made to CAMH at https://give.camh.ca/site/Donation2?df_id=2466&2466.donation=form1.
